Karen Yasuko Nakamura of Kalaheo, Hawaii, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on August 1, 2026, at the age of 83. She was born in Koloa on July 14, 1943. Karen spent many dedicated years working at Kauai Community College in the Admissions and Records Department before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas S. Nakamura; her daughter, Shelene Fujii; her parents, Susumi and Mitsue Oshiro; her sister, Kathleen (Wayne) Oshiro Nickens; and her brother, Dennis Oshiro.
Karen is survived by her children, Dourien (Kimo) Doria of Kona, Karene (Miles) Kawamoto of Lihue, Kristie-Lyn (Darin) Nonaka of Oahu, Terry (Paul) Kuribayashi of Koloa, Chris Nakamura of Kapaa, and Wendy (Aaron) Nakamura-Chan of Oahu.
She is also survived by her 14 grandchildren, Kari-Lyn (Matthew) Gutierrez, Derwin (Shantel) Yamamoto, Dustin (Lehua) Yamamoto, Kirstie-Lyn (Samuel) Auld, Bronson Doria, Ronsen Macabeo Fujii, Ikaika Dang, Travis (Ashley) Nakamura, Daniel (Jenny) Dang, Evan (Chrissy) Fujimoto, Christyn Sokei, Jordan (Mia) Nakamura, Evan (Kira) Kuribayashi, and Taryn (Ty) Matsuoka; and her 19 great-grandchildren.
Karen is further survived by her brothers, Nelson (Cheryle) Oshiro of Hanapepe and Keith Oshiro of Lihue; her sister, Sheri (Alton) Amimoto of Lihue; her sister-in-law, Daunene (Dino) Oshiro of Anahola; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles, and cousins.
Due to the hurricane, the celebration of life has been changed to Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation starting at 9:30 AM, with services to follow at 10:30 AM. The family suggests casual attire, and flowers are welcome.
The family extends a special thanks to the emergency room doctors and staff at Wilcox Medical Center, Dr. Freeman, the 2nd and 3rd-floor nursing teams, the ICU staff, Dr. Lau, Dr. Chihara, and Heather Ross, RD for their compassionate care.
